The Adjunct Bus Driver Trainer provides behind-the-wheel Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) to prospective school bus drivers across Region 3. This role focuses on hands-on instruction, ensuring trainees develop the skills, safety practices, and confidence needed to operate a school bus in compliance with state and federal standards. The trainer works collaboratively with districts, maintains accurate training documentation, and upholds the highest standards of safety and professionalism while preparing new drivers for successful service in student transportation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must hold a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for a minimum of two (2) years.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience working with school bus drivers, including experience providing hands-on or behind-the-wheel training.
- Demonstrated safe driving record.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Strong understanding of FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements, specifically the behind-the-wheel (range and public road) components.
- Knowledge of school bus operations, safety procedures, state and federal regulations, and best practices for student transportation.
- Ability to deliver clear, patient, and effective instruction to new drivers with varying levels of experience.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to support adult learners and maintain positive relationships with districts.
- Ability to assess driver performance, provide constructive feedback, and document training accurately.
- Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and safety at all times.
- Skilled in managing schedules, organizing training sessions, and ensuring compliance with required documentation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide behind-the-wheel ELDT instruction in alignment with all FMCSA requirements and Region 3 ESC expectations.
- Train new school bus drivers in safe, effective operation of school buses on the range and on public roadways.
- Evaluate driver performance, identify areas for improvement, and provide targeted coaching.
- Maintain accurate records of training hours, assessments, and completion status for each trainee.
- Ensure all training activities follow safety protocols and regulatory guidelines.
- Communicate effectively with district staff regarding scheduling, progress updates, and any concerns related to driver readiness.
- Serve as a subject-matter resource on safe driving practices and school transportation procedures.
- Represent Region 3 ESC in a professional and supportive manner.
